Default 1987 Suzuki lt250 Hard start

I have a 1987 Suzuki lt250 4wd. I have fully rebuilt this engine.. great compression but I havent done anything to the carb yet.. The starter is locked up so I have to pull start it.. Takes about 20 times to get it started with the pull starter and sometimes requires a cap full of gasl put into the carb. Once the ATV starts it runs great and starts on one pull start everytime until the following day.

Any suggestions on how to fix this or where to start with.. I dont want to burn up a new starter cranking it too much.

Thanks
Chris

You didn't clean the carb?
Maybe the timing is off a notch?

NO I havent cleaned the carb out yet.. planning on doing that this weekend..

TIming is dead on.. I was kind of **** about that ... Once I start it for the day it runs all day long fine and restarts with one pull.. When it sits overnight it is hard to start. I am also going to check the valve adjustment as well.. The preious owner didnt take good care of the ATV so I am working on that little by little.

Clean carb Easy How To Instruction

Make sure the choke enrichment plungers are not stuck in the carb, if it is not coming up, no additional fuel is delivered when you "choke" the engine.

If pilot jet will not come out just use the wire and spay without removing the jet, better than mangling the jet's slot at least.

Yeah i got mine up and going great..

I adjusted the valves, new spark plug and cleaned the carb out..

Does it drive fine ? My intake valve was a little tight and exhaust vale was loose.

MOst likely I would clean out the carb first and a new plug .. I didn't even need to replace any gasket on mine and no leak after it was back on.

just checked.. they actually have different ranges for the intake and exhaust valves.. they verlap though. SO I used the one in between that coul dbe for both. It worked perfectly. .005" / .127 mm was on the feeler guage I used.

AS for the carb.. I just took it apart slowly one screw at time.. soaking the jets in a little carb clean.. Just set everything in order as you take it out.. I blew some of the air passages out with a little bit of low air pressure to make sure no dirt was inside. The mixture screw I set somewhere's around 1 3/4 to 2 turns out. The idle I adjusted accordingly to get a smotth idle. ON the left handle bar there is a lever for the choke at starting ..its helps if you pull that down.. took me some time to figure that out as well.

I can try to answer anything else just let me know.
